I just wanted to say hello. I'm a nooby.
I downloaded the game 3 days ago from the Matrix site and have finished the tutorials. I'm now making my way through the manual which arrived with my hard copy yesterday.
I'm slowly starting to make sense of the CP thing with Army/corp/division.
The downloaded version is 1.5. Are there patches and what do these patches do?
The game is terribly addictive. I played it for about 12hrs yesterday.
One thing I find frustrating though is my geographical knowledge of America and finding places.
On the reinforcements page, when you hover over a unit, it lights up on the mini map where the state that they spawn from is.
It would be nice if this also worked in reverse. For example, I might think, 'Shit, I could really do with some guns in the South West'. Now I know that Texas is in the South West but I have to look through all the reinforcements looking for the little "TX" before I can order them and it doesn't seem to go in alphabetical order.
In my ignorance sometimes I'm not even sure where some states are or their abreviations. In my defence I am English.
If I could hover on the mini map over the state where I need reinforcements and then the reinforcements that are available in that area were to light up I would find this element of the game easier and it would make it faster.
Great game though. And these forums have answered a few of my nooby questions already.
The only one I have really is about how many patches there are, where to find them and do I have to download in order og go straight to the latest version?
I hope I've posted this in the right section.

This is probably the forum you should have posted in. The latest patch is 1.10d and AFAIK you can apply it on top of any previous version, it contains all changes. You can find the patch in the top thread of that forum.
I'm more or less a noob myself, I've had the game for some time but only recently got really into it. The problem you describe is not unfamiliar to me, but think of it this way: now you can learn US geography.

Hi and welcome!
Don't worry too much about geography... your problems are only temporary.
After a week playing the game you will be an expert on USA geography... and i don't mean states, i mean counties, towns, rivers, mountains...
As an Spanish, at first i was lost as well n the huge map...
By the way, patch to the last patch (1.10d) ASAP!

The list of changes since 1.05 is huge. You can check it all on the readme file you will find on your installation folder after patching.
There are some that will help you on your problems. For example, newly recruited units will be shown on a display you can clink and the map will center on the selected unit.
Regards!

Don't feel so bad, most people living here don't know where the states are!
My one geographical gripe in the game is that I'm a Nebraskan and to see Omaha and other Nebraska sites labeled 'KS' is as about a big as insult as you can give us. Since NE wasn't a state at the time (but a really big territory) and didn't contribute more than a couple of units in the ACW I'm sure they didn't want to confuse things. But come on, Kansas?!

Hi Strax,I used to be English too{Essex},Canadian now thou.Yea your right it is a great game,it also keeps getting better with all the great support. The best thing for learning where all the states are is to hit the political states button just above the mini-map,then zoom out.All the states will be color coded with their names. If you like reading history may I also recommend, The Civil War:A Narrative by Shelby Foote in 3 volumes. In my opinion the best thing out there that covers the whole war from start to the finish, though it is long, almost 3000 pages. It'll breath life into all those great little generals pictures on the counters.

Thanks chaps.
What a great and helpful community you've got going here and as I said, a lot of my questrions have already been answered on the forums. I'm sure I'll have some more in the coming weeks though.
Cheers.

I'm a native Kansan, and if I were living back there now I would be insulted by having Nebraska counted as one of "us."

But now that I'm in Cincinnati, I don't really care. But it is irritating to see that lazy McClellan "parked" in Cincinnati for so long doing nothing. Gives the city a bad name.

Bit late to the thread but....
As a fellow Brit I also have trouble with the State/Cities location. This link is a pretty good one. Shows the States and the Capitals/Main Cities and main rivers. Best of all it looks OK on A4.

This one is useful because it has the States Postal Code :
