Ok more questions here for the illuminati of the game.

CSA and USA(more interested about CSA)start the game with coastal and fort batteries in some places. What do these guns represent? Are they rifled or smoothbored and which(fort or coastal)?
Whould it be logical to change the fort batteries with 10 or 20 parrotts?

Also the coastal guns fire only against ships or any enemy units?

Do they other gun types fire against ships as well(6lb/12lb etc)?

1 more question.can i make captured artillery units to fill their hit points if captured and how?

Hi

I think fort and coastal represent different types of big guns, mounted on fixed positions. Not the standard field guns. I'm no expert on types and calibres but there are some on the forums.

Coastal only fire against enemies coming form the sea: ships, troops assaulting from the sea...
All kind of guns can bombard against ships. Even field ones. But they are much less efficient than the special ones (limited range and power).

About the last question, no captured arty does not recover strength, just cohesion.

I don't quite understand the rationale for why captured guns and supplies can't be replaced but the most practical use I find for captured arty and supplies is to use them to create new forts.

Right, Turbo. I don't understand either and i *strongly* suspect that hvy arty replacement chits are mistakenly used by the engine to try to refill them.

My bet is that they don't refill because his associated unit type is from the original owner... and as the CSA you can buy "USA arty" or "USA wagons" replacements...
I think it's more an engine limitation that an intended effect.

Take CSA and assault Ft. sumter, u ll most likely capture that gun. Next build a HVY arty replacement and u ll see the chit goes expended.

At the beginning i was told that it COULD have been delivered to all the CSA coastal defenses which start depleted but i didnt' really get down to investigate there.

*IF* there are missing elements or numbers in the coastal defenses of CSA then the chit will always be expended if not, then it's expended for that captured gun, which can't be refilled, so it's a wasted chit.

Now considering how much the hvy arty replacement costs, whatever the answer to this little quiz, i think for CSA is a low priority investment if not a suicidal one.

If you go and compare the cost of a new hvy gun and that replacement you'll see by yourself : worth buying anew or try to send a replacement?

Can captured guns and supply units somehow be autoraised into regular (equivalent) gun and supply units? Maybe adding that to the unit is a solution

I haven't noticed this post before.
GShock the CSA has a TON of heavy artillery units on his dozen of forts that beginning the game very depleted. The Heavy Arty replacements goes towards refilling all this coastal arty.
In fact, this coastal arty usually needs several heavy arty replacements to get at 100%.
There is no mystery here... is pretty evident. :siffle:
It has no relation at all to the Sumter captured battery. It will not fill out because of an engine limitation... and of course will not spend any replacements.
It will be nice for captured units to be able to refill, but in IMHO, its not that big deal...

While people are talking about guns, I have a couple of questions.

1) If I put naval artillery in (say) Cairo, will it fire ? You'd think it would make a pretty big hole in a cotton-clad.

2) In my latest game (patch 10) I've noticed that the CSA are removing the fort batteries from their forts and shuffling them round the map. I've just captured one and have been unable to move it. If I click on the icon, it says that fort artillery can't be moved, but it has already been moved by the CSA to deposit it where it is in the countryside.

1- Sure it will fire.
2- Move it by train/ship or it will take ages

I also believe it is irrelevant the use of captured units. They are to be used as main front units, if CSA gets them. And in a normal game just a few units can be captured, perhaps a 5% in a very lucky game.

Even it is better they can not be replaced. The question is: Oh! those USA artillery are better than mine. So I want to replace them full strength in order to get the best guns in all the south!

Arty in the south was deployed in smaller size batteries (for instance 4 guns) while USA were size 6. This was a real OOB for those units.

So they are 1,5 powerful and 1,5 expensive. Unfortunately for CSA they cost the same conscripts. Designers could have forced batteries being equal in cost/power, but wanted to force USA arty was clearly better organized than CSA. :p leure:

Heavy art replacements are used in around 20 depleted heavy coastal arty.
