Fort Question

Playing as CSA I have built a fort in New Orleans. I used the 4 artillery and 2 supply wagons in my stack that was (inside) the city. I also had a stack entrenching outside the city. Now the fort is complete both stacks say they are inside the fort in Iberville, which is the region I think. What has happened here ? When I try to drag my field force into the region it stays there for a couple of seconds and then moves back over the city and says it's still inside the fortress.
What I wanted was the city itself to become the fortress and an additional force heavily entrenched outside the city. I dont want my field force bottled up in the city.
What really are the point of fortresses as the attacking force can simply besiege rather than being forced into an offensive posture and having to attack a very high level entrenchment ?

Well, as you might agree, the leader of the enemy stack can choose not to attack a heavily entrenched fort before besieging it.

The other point is, if he attacking force is much bigger than the force defending, your stack leader can choose to enter a city or a fort, and wait for reinforcements, rather than being destroyed by the enemy. If you want to get your forces out of the fort, you can press the "sortie" button (or whatever it was, it is the opposite button of "enter").

Forts can have multiple purposes, you can check it here:

ok, but let me put it another way.

If I have a fortress built in New Orleans city itself, can I also have another force outside the city in entrenchments. This is what I wanted to achieve, but now the fort has been finished all my forces in the region appear to be inside the fort.

I have a similar situation at Richmond, Vicksburg, Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga etc etc. I have a garrison inside each city, and a further force entrenching outside the city.

What I want to happen is that if and when a Union force enters that region it will first be forced to attack my entrenched force, and then if they are defeated the city itself is a fall-back position.

Hi
Yes you should be able to do it. As in any other structure.
Maybe the region area is small and you have to point your mouse very carefully to send the force outside the city? :bonk:

I have also noticed more than once that a comparitively small force can beseige a very much larger force in a city - surely cant be right this one? Or is that a bug?

AFAIK, the besieged force is free to sortie if they wish to engage the besiegers.

Screen your city with some forces outside, while the main is inside, if you prefer.

Just had Bearegard ordered to sortie out but no offensive button would work as he was inactive so he then just shoots back into Frericksburg no action having taken place and is still beseiged? Having to split up his command to break seige was less than a satisfactory solution, especially if Fed reinforcemnets were to arrive to support the beseiging force?

That's the problem with inactive generals; either wait for him to become active, or detach a force that is either unled or under active leadership.

Facing a reinforced enemy is indeed a danger when sortieing ;)
