Just wondering why we aren't able to build light infantry brigades?

Jagger's mod has a few two-element bdes in it. Lots of fun.

I'd like to see the units he put in his mod in the regular game. (Arty bns, cav bdes, L. Inf bdes)

I third it!
I particularly miss cavalry brigades for Forrest, Wheeler, Buford and the like
Lone regiments need too much CP. And cavalry divisions seems and overkill.

Are there problems with implementing these changes that my void of computer knowledge prevents me from knowing?

Single element cavalry and artillery work fine, and most importantly, we can already build them.

There was no light infantry in the Civil War. A few units still had light infantry in their name but they were the same as any other infantry unit.

When I say light infantry I am referring to the games description of irregular organised units. In game they are called light infantry...

EDIT: And I am just wondering if there is a reason why they cannot be recruited as reinforcements?

Just the regular size that the free brigades are. Two line infantry with the one light infantry ( or irregular infantry for smartypants chris up there).

If you're down with trying something different, Jagger's mod has the units that I mentioned above and is solid fun.

Maybe I will have to give it a try. Really I was just wondering what the designers reason was for leaving this unit out of the reinforcement possibilities. Ahh well I guess I'll never know.

I was also curious about fact that on replacements page there is a slot for purchasing light infantry replacements but no slot for building them. Not really sure about what constitutes light infantry in game terms and is it worth buying replacements for them?

The element box is a standard infantry box with an 'L' in the center. The only brigades that have them are the volunteer bdes that start with two militia and one light infantry, and the elite bdes also have one that gives them their sharpshooter benefit.

I always thought that was just a bug on their NATO symbol lol. Now I'm not so sure...I wonder if those elite Rebel brigades take a light infantry replacement for those guys or if it's really just the wrong symbol. It does not say Light Infantry in their pop up box for the element.

In my PBEM mod, I have a very limited number of small 2 or 3 regiment light infantry brigades within the reinforcement pools available for both sides.

The primary advantage of light infantry is they lose cohesion at a slower pace than regular infantry. Which makes them ideal for use in difficult terrain such as mountains, swamps or wilderness. They perform very slightly worse than regular infantry in battle.

The primary disadvantage of light infantry is that they do not have a late war model. Their stats do not improve with upgrade as does regular infantry. They are also 750 man regiments vs the regular 1000 man regiments.

Technically there weren't any "light" infantry brigades during the civil war. Some troops were called "light" infantry simply because of unusual performance or hard marching ability.

I am assuming the light infantry are recruited from hardier troops comfortable with living an outdoor lifestyle and rough travel. Perhaps troops raised from mountainous regions or less settled, more wild parts of the country. Again, the numbers available for recruitment are small.

I also removed the light infantry regiments from the original Union volunteer militia/light infantry brigades. Now those volunteer brigades are pure militia regiments without the light infantry regiment.

no they dont upgrade
