Promotion problem--and if promote both?

If I can promote Gen. X and get the "Gen. Y will feel passed over" message, will I pay the VP/NM cost if I can, and do, promote Gen. Y the very same turn? Logically, I shouldn't, but I am not sure whether the game understands that ... ?
Thanks!

I am not sure how the 'initiative roll' of that works. I agree that you shouldn't, but it may still fire.
Maybe if you press the button for the higher seniority general first?

That was my thinking. But the promotion doesn't become effective right away; he stays on the present rank, just with the button pressed down, and the tooltip message for the lower seniority one doesn't change, it still lists the cost. So the question is, when do the promotions take place (when the turn is run, I assume?), and do they happen all at the same time and independently from each other; or is the more senior general promoted first, so that all is fine when the less senior one is promoted afterwards?

Actually the cost is in this case not the primary problem (it's rather low, because they're close in seniority); but I would want to be sure I actually get both promotions, and don't lose the one over taking the other. The drop in seniority for the more senior general would be a real loss. (So if I can't get both, I'd promote just him and leave the other alone, but naturally both would be better. :innocent

If you seperate them into different stacks, you will get both promotions. I have had that happen before, where both were together and one got it and the other didn't.
Just split them up and you should be fine.

They're not together now ... so I'll take a chance. Thanks!
I'd still be interested in the answer to the question, on a general level. When and how are these promotion issues resolved? If anyone knows, I'd be grateful for an explanation.

If you promote both generals in the same turn, you will not receive any penalties.

Thank you, sir.

You are more than welcomed. I know that I agonised over what to do with two generals being up for promotion and one being upset over the other guy getting the extra star. In the end, I punched both and it turned out OK.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out. I got only the promotion for the lower ranking leader and paid the cost for bypassing the other one.

You did promotion on two separate stacks?
Or it was both leaders on the same stack?

They were hundreds of miles apart ... one was on the Cumberland, the other on the Ohio.

yeah quess the solution was you had to get them in the same stack?---an auto-redeploy, if you had that checked should be the answer?....I allow at least one since the initial setting of the game defaults to that option.

I did once try a promotion and failed, because after clicking promotion, (perhaps also did send some move orders), changed the ROE... seems clicking a new ROE unclicks promotion.
perhaps you have unclicked by mistake the more senior leader?
do you have still the old order file to review?

I could swear I have not, because I always triple-check before I send off the .ord file .... but I probably shouldn't!

Yes. How can I check this? Thanks.

create a new save directory (for instance called test) example:
AACW/saves/test
copy the old .TRN and .ORD in this directory
Open old game. (This way You get 2 turns in the load game options, the new and the turn-1)
Go to both leaders and look if promote - clicks are activated
I try to check this also, but as promote click is in a different "roster" than the railroad&evade click (more important to me), our eyes dont see it while doing ERTY.
Perhaps AACW2 could improve this promote tricky things

If you only got one promotion, then some how you failed to promote the more senior. The process of promoting two leaders with out penalty is still valid IMHO.

I'll tell Thomas he should blame me. Well, guess he already did.
I'll check this out the way Coregonas suggested.

I never worry about the cost of promoting one general over another. Play game as a dictatorial CSA President.
The only considerationS I give is in the generals stats. If a 4-1-1 general comes along and the 3-1-1 general has greater seniority I still promote the 4-1-1 General. I also consider if a General is promotable or not - especially out west where I am usually looking to organise Corps as early as game allows after arrival of ASJohstone.
I rarely pay much in terms of cost really. I might reconsider what I do if costs are increased in coming patches?

It's solved. I promoted the more senior leader and redeployed him the same turn, putting him in a stack under a higher ranking commander. This made him unpromotable (the button greyed out). Stupid me.
Thanks to Coregonas for telling me how to figure this out. Worked just fine.

Just one more point ...

Last turn, I did this successfully ... promote one leader, and also the other guy who would have felt passed over and "angered".
However, here is the catch to be kept in mind. And this is something the tooltip does not warn you about. Even if both leaders are promoted simultaneously, there is the chance that a leader
other than the (originally) most senior will still feel passed over. Obviously you can beware of this only by checking the seniority list manually ... and even then there's little you can do about. But at least the political cost will not come as a surprise.
