River boats questions

Hi everybody, I have two questions regarding boats:

I can't manage to block enemy troops from crossing rivers with gunboats (I tried with a stack of 4 gunboats). Is there a minimum limit of boats or some other limitations to make the blockade effective?

I read troops could be resupplied from transport boats. How can it be done?

1) You might have to block more than one section of the river in order to block movement across it; where was it you were blocking, and where did the enemy cross? Also note that any enemy boat presence cancels your block. In any case, one gunboat should be enough to block.

2) Park a transport (containing supplies) either in the region the units is in or in a bordering region/sea zone/river section

I always use a minimum of 3 early in game - one to block obvious crossing point and two more to block the 2 adjacent river areas. Note that this has only worked in 1861 though as far as I can see. Later in game Feds just blew my csa gunboats out of water or gunboats moved for whatever reason to other river areas?

It was a Bowling Greene KY, as the CSA I was sieging the city and there was a US stack on the other side of the river, so I set 4 grouped boats right behind the city on the river but the enemy army succeeded to reach me all the same.

What posture setting did you use. If I go on defensive my gunboats dont do anything - they just get shunted aside - no action of any kind takes place?I have to set them on offensive postures to get them to do anything useful like engage enemy units at all?

Bowling Greene doesn't strike me as a region you can cut off by using gunboats; I mean, you can reach it by boat, but most regions it borders are overland, not across that river?

Posture doesn't matter for blocking land unit movement

Never tried to sail boats up to Bowling Greene myself - dont even know where the nearest harbour is. I have noticed a difference in posture setting on water movement especially against transports. Also in blocking movements by land units trying to cross Mississippi river or other major western rivers.

Posture doesn't matter when it comes to blocking land unit movement directly across the river, moving land region to land region. It does matter when it comes to intercepting boats (including transports) on the river

Oh sorry, I was talking about the city Bowling Greene (the city at north KY owned by US at the beginning of the game), I can't remember the name of the region but the city is immediately next to a river on its south side.
Theoretically it would be possible to block the access to this city (the region by extension) from the other side of the river no?

Just guessing, but from that photo it would take about (I am guessing but close) 5 Riverboats all strung out to prevent troops from going around....

And that JUST on that photo...not counting upstream ect.

The only region you'll be able to block from crossing into Bowling Greene is Grayson. Barren is connected across a small river where your boats can't sail. Note that units in Grayson can still reach Bowling Greens by moving via Barren.

oooook! So we have to cover the entire piece of river between two regions to prevent the passage form one to the other?

I'm still not clear about where it is you want to block crossing? Bowling Greene doesn't seem to me to be a region that it's even possible to block access to with gunboats on the river there.

You may be able to block from Grayson to Warren. But the smaller waters flowing south-east are too shallow for your boats and thus, cannot block movement across from Barren to Warren.
