I've yet to figure out exactly what "sailors" are good for? What is their purpose within the game engine?

Same as Marines but slightly cheaper I think. Help speed up river crossings in the stack they are in.
If you have one you can click on the ability in the unit detail panel and it shows the Pontoneer ability which increases river crossing by 50%.

Cheers, Chris

Plus, if you are into role-playing a bit... You can have marines/sailors traveling with your fleets and have a ready made force to launch a little raid with. For clarity, naval leaders CAN command land stacks.

Not so, so effective, but it is fun.

Yes, use those Marines and sailors for amphibious landings!

They are useful 1 per corps, as these earn bonus also while crossing rivers.

Bonus
less cohesion lost while moving (also less hits lost)
faster move & retreats

Repeat of my reply to Heldenkaiser's "what units go where" thread:

For the Union, marines or sailors should be included in a minimum of one division per corps, because the pontooneer effects apply at the stack level. They are not that much more expensive than line infantry, and fight well, so I try to spread them out - one to each division - for flexibility.

I tend to use marines in my divisions, sailors brigaded with a zouave or upgraded militia (1CP - around 50 strength) for smaller forces. Pair that unit with a leader and sharpshooters - a perfect stack for amphibiously killing lone entrenched militia.

When the Union Brigade and Bull Run Brigade show up, marines can create brigades with them. I believe marines can also create brigades with other marines, if you want to go that route and buy "over the limit".

They get the bonuses for their high ratings, but 0 CP.
