Have any North players managed to sink the CSS Alabama, I've been trying for months with no sucess. My fleets don't even attack it, actually they hardly attack anything. Almost forgot, you get +5 NM if sucessful, I guess I can kiss the 5NM goodbye.

Is it in the main campaigns or only some scenarios? I don't think I've ever seen it (or maybe I wasn't paying attention).

my point exactly, you over looked it (not paying attention) because its just one ship. however in regards to sinking it...

1. are you sure your sea units are set of "offensive"... so they can engage the target when it comes into the same zone...

2. is the fleet of ships engaging the CSS Alabama strong enough and large enough in battle actually strong enough to sink it?

3. wat admiral is encharge of the ship?

4. tried putting a few more ironclads and steam frigates in the fleet? that might work

It is in the main campaign and the July campaign. I don't know about other scenarios.

The Alabama spends most of its time in the shipping box (often teamed with the Sumter, Semmes in charge of both). You shouldn't need to be in aggressive stance there, it will only cause cohesion loss, not affect your chances of encountering raiders. What will affect your chances is splitting your fleet, putting several squadrons in the box. Of course, you need to make each squadron strong enough to deal with whatever it might encounter. If you put enough there to seriously interdict raiders, you are probably shortchanging the blockade for a while. I would suggest using 3 ship squadrons of steam and armoured frigates for this, each squadron supported by a transport to extend cruise times. It takes a concerted effort, planning, and some patience. If you time it right, an additional squadron off the Atlantic coast can catch the raiders at low cohesion returning to port. YMMV.

For your squadrons operating in the shipping box, I do not think that you need separate transport attached as they will take supply from your shipping transports.

Learning something new all the time. That must be why drained transports with no supplies never starve returning to port. I was wondering about that.

I was in an aggressive stance, I had one squadron, rather large, next time I will use split squadrons.

For some reason I was always under the impression that sinking the Alabama required the presence of Manet in an adjacent land area in observation mode.

In South Africa, there is a traditional Afrikaans song called 'Daar Kom Die Alibama' (There Comes the Alabama). Tradition has it that the song was written to celebrate the 1863 visit to Cape Town by the CSS Alabama under the command of Raphael Semmes. The Alabama had just captured the Union ship Sea Bride in Table Bay and this was reason enough to throw a huge party for the crew and locals on the beach with provisions supplied by the Alabama. The party was apparently a great success. One of the Alabama's flags was presented to Cape Town and today still hangs in the South African Museum.
