Rebel West Virginia

Just a thought,
Say the Confederates are able to take and hold an establishment in West Virginia.
Will this stop the trigger of the "Lincoln proclaims WV a state of the Union" event?
If no; is there a way to stop this act?
If yes; is there a similiar Rebel event that will trigger?

I was totally going to post about this tonight!
Taking WV is the ultimate way to isolate the East and West of the union. You have reach through huge swaths of Penn. and Ohio. I feel that Pittsburgh is the Vicksburg of the East. You really cut them in two if you reach it and WV is the easiest way to do that.
To your post... It has ALWAYS gone to the Union in my games. Which makes maintaining effective rail movement back to Virginia a constant hassle.
I too could stand to see a CSA siding event.

Indeed. I seem to recall that the illustrious Robert E. Lee had a post in the Virginia mountains. His record there, as I'm sure everyone knows, was not worthy of his namesake.
If the distinguised General Lee wasn't able to do it perhaps no one could. Achieve the impossible perhaps? Or maybe Lee was just having an off week?

Not that it is not doable, but taking WV is a chore.
Rough terrain all over. One rail line back to VA that stretches a large number of provinces. Essentially no safe/easy way to retreat out if things go awry. But it is well worth it once you get there.

Any volunteers to create the scenario?

I would totally help in any way I could. But I know next to nothing about that side of computers.
But seriously, if someone starts work on it and needs a tester, I would love to help. It would be a short one as the Confederates were out of WV by November/December of '61.

A West Virginia Scenario may be fun to play, however, I think we are diverging from my original intent.
Allow me to rephrase. In the grand campaign v. 1.09:
Say the Confederates are able to take and hold an establishment in West Virginia.
Will this stop the trigger of the "Lincoln proclaims WV a state of the Union" event?
If no; is there a way to stop this act?
If yes; is there a similiar Rebel event that will trigger?

I believe the answers are currently no. It would be a nice couple of events to script, if anyone has time (and easier than developing a scenario).

Depending on what it is you're looking for, there is one snag; states aren't dynamic. They are pre-defined form the start, which is why West Virginia always is a state game-wise, even from April 1861.
The Lincoln-thingy is mostly a flavour-event, without too much impact on the game (unless I'm much mistaken)

I think it's better that states are static objects so as to be able to proclaim martial law, or suspend habeus corpus in WV. Historically I believe the people were strongly pro-unionist in sentiment.
I think a corresponding flavour event for the rebs, in regards to WV, should be added in any case.

I believe it could be tied in, by writing conditions in the events that look at specific region ownership.
Additionally, a loyalty shift could be programmed, as well as NM, changes, etc.....
Just can't 'merge' WV back into VA. [Which is why it starts as WV, instead of creating WV in 1863]

Interesting ... the WV Volunteers (free brigades for the Union) event is tied to ownership of Grafton. This one (in addition to the WV State event) could be used as a basis for writing what y'all propose.
E. Tennessee and NW N.Carolina!

These two areas were strongly pro-Union but were occupied and subdued by the Rebs.

Of course, Winston County Alabama, was strongly pro-union, but was never occupied or subdued by the Rebs. The county was popularly known as the 'Republic of Winston' or the 'Free State of Winston'.

Summarizing,
In the April '61 vanilla scenario there should be events tied to Confederate establishment in West Virginia. The rationale for this could be better than historical CSA performance.
Do you think it will add anything to gameplay? Sounds like it would be easy to work in.

I read in one of the Civil War history books that even though West Virginia was pro union that at least half of all the troops raised there during the war actually fought for the Confederacy - For me this is an interesting anomaly.
