Seniority is 1 but can't promote?

I thought the requirements for promotion were 4 congratulations for action in the field or being seniority rank of 1?

U.S. Grant got congratulated for his utter destruction of the army around Nashville and he is now seniority 1 and is promotable. Is that right? Did that change somewhere along the line? or is a 3 star as far as he can go?

Learned something new as well. I knew that Generals can get ticked and cost you NM and VP if you pass over them for Army command but never experienced it with only rank. Sherman was angry for Fitz John Porter and McClarnard (sp) both being promoted before him but their action in the field was far superior to his unfortunately.

I have an almost invincible Corps with Grant and Sherman leading it. They have just laid a path of destruction through Nashville. The poor Army of the Tennessee fought to the last man with the last battle consisting only of 1 artillery and the Army HQ which got promptly wiped out.

I'd like to know how to tell when a general has received enough 'congratulations!' points to be moved up to promotion seniority.

A message in the log menu will inform you that the General can be promoted and you MUST promote him that turn or he loses a seniority level I believe.

After you have been congratulated 4 times for your efforts in the field a message will also inform you he may be promoted

Per the wiki and manual

To promote a leader to a new rank, it is specifically needed that:

  • He is potentially promotable (the database must have an entry for his new grade). This is indicated by a 'Yes' in the 'Is Promotable' line, element detail window. AND
  • He has a seniority of 1 or 2 in his current rank OR
  • He has gained 4 points of seniority since he appeared on map (the base seniority is under brackets in the the Element Detail Window, top panel section).

The first item is a common source of confusion while learning. Not only are a majority of Generals never promotable, but some also 'switch in and out'. Example: Early on, Grant is promotable as 2 star, but not as 3 star. (I haven't gotten far enough to see if/how he gets to 4 stars... :siffle: )

In addition to the message on the log, promotable leaders have their nato symbol (square with stars) flashing on the unit panel AND on the ledger they have their name writen on red.
But... i have never heard or experienced what you says abour losing seniority if don't promoted... :8o:
Can sombody confirm if its true or false???

Cheers!

I can't remember the exact penalty but I believed it was losing seniority.

Yes, if you don't promote it when he is eligible, he loses one seniority point. This is done so that you don't get a large pool, 'in the freezer', of promotable generals. You must decide when the opportunity arises.

It seems i should take Stonewall Jackson out of the freezer in may current CSA game :siffle:
But.. its just 1 seniority point lost or he will keep going down more points as turns goes by??
Thanks and cheers!

You are right! It seems Jackson gets the "quick angered" trait at three stars!
Well... i will ponder about his promotion :grr: :niark:

Depends, if you have a promotable general which is not promoted, he loses one point, but if he gained more than 1 above what is needed, he will be still promotable next turn (and you are back to the start of the sentence).

Thanks! I think i got it!
So if i don´t promote him, he will lose 1 point per turn until he is no longer promotable.
Cheers!

There seems to be a problem when two generals become eligible for promotion on the same turn. I try to promote both, but when the next turn comes only one has been promoted and the other gets passed over losing seniority and promotability.

I was still running 1.07c when I saw these things happen, maybe it already got fixed.

I know in 1.07h it is not an issue. I have promoted a couple generals on a single turn and not had that happen.

I have had Sherman get ticked for a couple gaining seniority before him but the lazy bum didn't get his division in to 4 battles I was in while the other two, lesser generals, did and got congratulated for it.

Speaking of that Sherman never did get promoted that game at all. Took Grant's Corps with Sherman as one of the division commanders consisting of 65k+ men on the biggest transport assault I have ever undertaken against Chattanooga and lost every single man when my intelligence failed to inform me of the 65k sixth level entrenched CSA army waiting for me. I lost EVERY last man and a few generals in that catastrophic assault.

3 star vs. 2 star

What is the benefit of being 3 star vs. 2 star other than 3 star can lead an army.

Does anyone know the "%" bonus passed down the chain per star level... example (of how I believe it works...) for say attacking... a 3 star general of offense 4 passes a .5 modifier per offensive "level" while a division commander passes only .25 or something.
