Back with a few questions

After a bit of a gaming hiatus (kids will do that to you), I picked up AACW again and loaded the most recent patch.
1) Is the AI 2x as skilled as the 1.05 days or am I just a bit rusty?
2) Was espionage ever considered as an option? As the CSA I was hoping a few souls at the Willard Hotel might give me some info on troop dispositions around Washington . . .
I'm looking forward to the Napoleonic game, but still have a lot to do in AACW. Cheers . . .
