It's basically the shape of the BASE of the stack.
You can see the exact level in the manual at pages 53/54.

They provide nice tooltips too, when you hover your mouse over them :)

I would like to be able to determine the entrenchment level of my opponents troops. The defensive strength of a formation at entrenchment level 2 vs level 8 is very different. And in reality, I suspect good commanders had a fairly good idea of the strength of enemy entrenchments before attacking.

This may not be entirely accurate, but I believe how the entrenchment graphics work is:

Level 1: no graphic
Level 2: white rocks
Level 3: brown rocks + wire
Level 4-5: palisade
Level 6-8: bricks (I'm really not sure about 6)

A cannon graphic just means there are artillery present in the stack, doesn't say anything about entrenchment level.

True, but then I have no special graphics for any of these. :innocent: I understand what you mean, though. I would occasionally like to be able to tell if my opponent is really well dug in, or really really well dug in. The graphics just give you a basic idea what you are up against. It is nice to at least have some guideline, as in: "Brick walls mean don't go there." or "Brick walls mean that stack is unlikely to attack me if I go around."

Wow!! I never linked the base graphic with level of entrenchment.

Thanks!

You can explore the content of AACW directories, Pocus has a strict name policy for graphic file :cwboy:

After testing: Levels 6-8 also use the palisade graphic. There is a big difference between Level 4 and Level 8 entrenchments . . . Is that what you meant, Lafrite?

Yes, only 6 graphics for 3 levels (with and without arty)
