As CSA, I have noticed that when you buy Light Artillery, at some point it seems to upgrade itself to 12 lb artillery, with a corresponding rise in it's effectiveness.

My question is: Does this cost the CSA player a Field Art. Replacement?

If not, isn't that a little gamey, basically getting Field Art. on the cheap?

That happened to me, too, and I don't think it did cost me replacements. Actually I was somewhat pissed about it, because the the light arty was part of a pack of four batteries build for the expressed purpose of constructing a particularly cheap fort with them. It delayed said construction for quite some time, until all four lights were "grown up"...

Served me right for being a cheapskate, I guess... :niark:

Why have you waited Henry, you don't have to have the same type to use it as a fort.

In the Various Events file there are a set of events for technological upgrades. THis is where conscripts become early volunteers, early volunteers become late volunteers, cavalry get upgrades, etc..

This is also where you find events where 6-lb guns upgrade to 12-lb guns. This was very historic, as most field commanders sent their 6-lb guns back to be melted down and forged into 12-lb guns. There probably could be a cost added, such as the financial and resource cost of re-forging these guns, but this would be done via event (could cause headaches as it eats up all your money and war material).

This is probably the reason why Elite Brigades are given free of charge as well (no money, manpower or war material)

OK, so I'm not the only one. I mean, it's not like it's going to make a huge impact, but just a note. Not sure why they upgrade, but they do. Maybe that is realistic, by the end of the war I don't think there were alot of 6lbers around at all. Most artillery was your basic 12 lb Napoleon and 10lb Parrott

Yup, most 6-lb guns were melted down and re-forged as 12-lb guns by request of the Army Commanders (Lee and Bragg made many requests for this to be done, and it finally was).
