Reducing texture size = faster speed?

I'm trying this game on an aging, underpowered (graphically speaking) notebook. 1.6Ghz Pentium M, 1.25GB memory, Intel i.855 graphics chipset.

Will reducing the texture size result in any performance gains? I don't care about the time it takes to process turns, but rather the sluggish scrolling speed on the map, as well as the slow mouse response time.

TIA,
Matt

You can try but I don't think you will gain a lot of performance. As far as I know the option to reduce the texture size (or more exactly: not to load the biggest textures) was introduced because some older graphic cards had problems with big textures which resulted in crashes.

You can force the game to run in 1024x768 resolution with AGESettings, the less surface drawn, the less demand for your video card.
