I'm currently just starting a new CSA April '61 campaign and the tooltip for the transportation box informs me that I need for example 128 for 'average rail transportaion'. What exactly does this mean?

Since I have been using the transport system to quickly move forces to the front in the hope of holding the North's summer offensive or even launch one of my own, I have noticed this figure has been increasing.

I've looked in the manual and FAQ but cannot find a reference to it.

I'm assuming that it is the amount of transport needed to distribute my supplies through the transport system and hence is increasing since I'm using all my capacity each time for troop movements. Is this a correct assumptation?

It could also represent a figure needed to move a percentage of my forces and therefore the increase is because my forces are expanding due to the ongoing mobilization.

I'm hoping it's an indication of supply needs since it will provide a useful barometer for how much supply backup I have and hopefully it will alliviate itself over the coming winter.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

The more I play this game the more I find I'm enjoying the system and the level of abstractation.

To tell you the truth, I don't pay much attention to those tooltips any more. I just see whether I run out of RR and water-borne transport points in any given turn. If I can no longer move everything I need to move, or if my stock of transport points gets very low, I buy more.

One thing I've never understood is what the "1/3, 2/3" etc chalkboard means. 1/3 is one-third of max transport capacity? Again, I go by what I actually use, not what is "average" or "max".

In my first full game (after the two spent learning from mistakes) I played the Union and of course just increased my transport capacity by a large amount whenever I saw it go into the 1/3 column.

With the CSA I'm short of funds and still plugging the gaps in my defence. The transport capacity is now saying I need 78 rail for minimal transportation. I was just curious because I have the feeling that I might be suffering due to my replacements not getting to my formations as I'm assuming that the replacement process is a function of the supply network.

I haven't bought any increase yet and will see how it pans out over the winter, would be nice to know what they mean though as I'm having problems ignoring it. Its like an itch and I've started scratching.

You need to keep an eye on those "Transport Assets and capacity" to be able to shift around your supply stocks, if you only have enough capacity to transport your troops you won't be moving your supplies correctly and risk having armies run out of supply (depots not getting supply from your rear areas).

Check page 35 of the manual. All of the unused rail and river transport points will be used to move around Supply during the Supply Distribution Phase. So if you are using all of your transport points, your supply network will suffer. I believe the 1/3, 2/3 and 3/3 is an estimate of how effective your network is. So if you are at 1/3 that means you are only moving about 1/3 of the supplies that can be moved around.

That's how I read it and so I thought it shouldn't be too much of an issue in the first few months since I don't have that many forces and what forces I do have are needed to try and hold a line in south Kentucky, south Missouri and maybe a small offensive on Washington. Therefore using the transport capacity in the summer/autumn to shift forces and hope the supply network can play catch up in the winter when I don't envisage a lot of troop movements (could be wrong on that one since the weather might force me to use transport).

My main concern was that the replacements you need in the begining are distributed using the supply network it which case I'm shooting myself in the foot since I would be better off marching in the good weather and letting the replacements filter through the supply system. At the moment the replacement system seems fine but its hard to judge.

I guess I'll find out by monitoring my supply wagons and see if they are being depleted while at the edge of the supply network.

Well, I *thought* I'd read the manual! I had no idea that the RR and water transport points affected supply distribution -- even though that makes sense. OK, OK, time to invest in more transport.
