Militia

Some militia disbands at the end of each year. I noticed that even militia placed in their home state are still subject for removal.

Militia lumped into divisions seem impervious to removal, I notice. Fine with me.

When the militia disband, is their manpower added back to the pool?

If not, why would I want to waste precious manpower and cash to recruit militia which may disappear within a year? I'd rather spend all of my resources on regular units before I wasted any on temporary militia.

Seems like militia are kind of a bad deal. Would it be better if militia in their home state at least were not subject to disbandment? Then they would still be useful for guarding important locations within their state, without being such a waste of resources.

I like militia. They're cheap. Replacements for them are even cheaper.

They're not that cheap. They cost 70% of the money and manpower of a regiment of regulars.

What's better, 7 regular regiments that fight well, or 10 militia regiments that fight poorly, and may be lost at the end of the year, leaving you with only 5?

I'd rather take the 7 regulars. Bum deal I tell you.

The only advantage is the savings in war supplies, but as a Confederate player, I have so far experienced a bottleneck in manpower, but not in war supply (1861). That makes the manpower too precious to spend on militia, as I see it.

One more advantage with Militia, they form fast. This is particularly useful in Missouri, Arkansas and Kentucky. Also if you have one of the leaders that increase Militia Regiments' Cohesion they make decent troops. Not to mention that once merged (you can merge two Militia Regiments into a mini brigade) they have a 2 elements to 1 command point rating which is pretty good.

Oh and not even mentioning that after a while they convert to recruit...

Is this true of militias that are purchased? Whenever this happens, I've noted that the disbanded units were free ones that automatically appeared on the map at the beginning of the year. I don't recall any of my purchased militias disbanding...but I could be wrong. Can anyone clarify?

If that is the case, then there is no problem I guess. Is this documented anywhere?
