Do I need a engineer to repair rail roads. Reading the manual but can't find it. Also how long does it take?

No, you don't need engineers. Just place any unit on area that has destroyed rail icon and then go to special orders and order repair. It takes one day to repair RR and it is always the first day. If you already have unit in damaged area you can click to repair RR and order it to move somewhere else all in one turn.
They will first repair and then move.
Hope this helped

Having Engineers present is not mandatory, but they will speed up the repair process :indien:

Thanks

If it only takes one day, how do engineers speed it up? I'm confused.

They work through lunch so it only takes half a day. :innocent:

I belive engineers speed up building defences and depots. I wasn't aware that they speed up repairs on RR.
Perhaps LMUBill is right :niark:

I just repaired a RR w/engineer, they do speed it up. I should have checked, but is a repair instant, so others can use it right then, or is it ready on the next turn? Just seen the answer, nevermind :tournepas

Engineer also *seems* to make it more likely that the repairs acutally take place. I've had a number of times where units ordered to make rail repairs have not done so.

Yah, it doesn't appear to be a sure thing --- I've had several occaisons where no repairs happened.

I also notice that the AI seems to be pretty bad about repairing rail lines: If the destroyed rail lines are in a high-traffic area it gets done, but if you blow rail lines a few sectors out, the AI makes no effort to fix them.

OK, just reading El Gatos post and was wondering about the AI repair. I tend to start in West Virginia and try to cut every rail line the Union has as far north as I can, especially all the east-west routes. I have yet to reach my objective of the Great Lakes but I am trying. My main concern is that if I cut that much rail will the AI just leave it as is or will they at least try to get one connection re-established? I would hate to know that I could hurt them that bad without them ever trying to fix what I did to them.

On a side not, the repair-move features works, does this also apply to cutrail-move. I hate leaveing my units in a spot for 2 turns, especially when I can tell them to cut and move on in the same turn.
