So what is going on with these? Seemed to have changed with the new patches...

I cant figure out what happens now...

Is it now whoever first invades does not get control?

CSA invades first Kentucky does not secede?

USA invades first Kentucky secedes?

there is some chances that KY secede if nobody does anything. Otherwise, the first to attack send KY to the other side.
The KY events chain is the most complex one, so if you see something weird, report.

What are the actual benefits/effects of Kentucky joining a side?

loyalty shift in your favor, you get a small bonus in conscripts and war supplies, you get more force pool from KY and I believe some new units are added on map.
