Armies separating in an unusual way

After a battle for Corinth in the Shiloh scenario, my Army of the Tennessee separated in a rather unusual way. Grant with the army HQ moved forward into Reb territory, while the two corps retreated backwards into Federal territory. As a result, Grant ended up behind enemy lines with some artillery and supplies.
Any idea as to what may have caused this? Right into the battle the army HQ and corps were using sync movement, so they should have stayed together ... and you don't really want an army HQ with a good general and very few troops all on its own in the enemy backyard. Any way I could have prevented this from happening? Thanks.
