Understanding Ratings?

There are a ton of ratings within the game especially when looking at unit details. How do you know if the numbers are good or bad? For example, if you have a defensive rating of 2, how would you know that is good or bad? How high does the scale go for each rating to determine relative goodness or badness? It would be nice if it said something like 2 out of 5 or something like that. Any chance this does exist somewhere and I'm just missing it?

For units, just compare the numbers to other types of units. For example, compare infantry to militia and you will get an idea of relative strength.

For generals, just know that Grant is Strategic 6, Offensive 6 and Defensive 4. I forget Lee's numbers, but you can be reasonably sure that Grant is one of the two or three best in the game. Just compare everyone to the Grant Standard and you'll know where they stand.

Keep in mind that the "average" general is rated at a 3 strategic, 1 offensive, 1 defensive. So you can use that to base your evaluations of generals on.

You gain +5% to combat for each point of offensive and defensive value ( offensive when attacking and defensive when defending of course).

Strategic rating is used for activation ( test under strat. value). With 6 success is guaranted.

You do get a 'feel' for all this after a while and rely less on the actual numbers.

Thanks for the input. Seems like something I will just learn over time. I still wish there was some general published guide as to the min/max/avg values of each rating. Not a big deal, but just would be helpful especially for newbies like myself.

Point taken, I will try to put up a generals guide as soon as possible. :gardavou:

Meanwhile, did you have a look in the archives of the Generals rating workshop?

I think you might find there plenty of usefull info, especially in this thread.

Best regards,

Korrigan

Thanks Korrigan, I'll take a look over there and see if it helps. Beyond the General Ratings, I would also like to see the same thing for Unit ratings. Once again, not looking for anything overly special, just something that I can tell whether the unit is good/bad/average in certain areas.

Thanks again.
