Does the game differentiate between killed and wounded casualties?

yes and no. One third of the casualties trickle back into your conscript pool, so whose are the wounded which are still able to retake arms. Aside that, no, a casualty is either a dead man, or a man wounded severely enough to not fight again in the war.
