Posture for ships??

OK, so I've read that ships at sea don't need to be on offensive posture to engage enemy ships. Is this so? Also, does the same apply to river ships? If I have a river gunboat on defensive mode, will it let enemy transports slip by? Do I need to put it on offensive posture to stop them?

Hello ! at sea I use to set my ships in defensive posture (it's the same result than ofensive and you lost less cohesion)
But it's a little different on river, if i want to intercept the enemy, my gunboats or ironclads are in ofensive posture. The same in coastal zone or if i want to intercept boats escaping from a harbor (the blockade runners for example)

The only place where is not taken into account the attitude of ships is in Blockade Boxes and in the Shipping Box. In the remaining places, if you want to catch the enemy vessels you'll have to put your ships in offensive attitude, as one thing it's blocking river to avoid enemy forces to cross a given river, and other one it's hunt enemy ships.
