Hi to everyone,
im an old time wargamer and I want to now the terrain I'm fighting on so I made this Excel spreadsheet to based on the information I've found on the terrain configuration files of ACW.
Hope this is useful to easily get a better idea of why our soldiers and armies get stomped or crush the enemy.
Check it out for errors or correction and please let discuss abit about the various mechanic of the game.

Can someone explain to me how protection and Troop quality works? or how to get an idea of the frontage for a given terrain based on "Combat unit Quote"?
Do river crossing terrain influence the whole battle or just maybe the first few hours of combat?
Thanks
Ciao

Protection lowers the damage from successful enemy hits with this formula 0,9^p, where p is protection number.
So unit with protection 3 will suffer 0,9^3 = 0,9×0,9×0,9 = 0,73 = 73% damage.

Why not try Apache OpenOffice. It's free and you don't need the internet to use it, just to download it once.

I use and love OpenOffice. And you can save in Microsoft format (too bad you can't go the other way as well).

According to the Wiki, each level of Entrenchment give 2 points of Protection.

For example, a unit in level 3 entrechment would take 0.9^6=53% of the damage a similar un-trenched unit would take.

Protection bonus only works up to lvl 4 entrenchment. Additional entrenchment gives firepower bonuses to your artillery.

If this formula is correct, maximum entrenchment bonus would be 0,9^8=43% damage sustained.
