Problem with March 62 Northern Papers Instructions

I am having some trouble deciphering a poorly worded phrase in the campaign game. This is the one having to do with the March 62 Northern Papers warning:

"Northern Papers Push for 1862 Offensive – 10 or more units within 2 regions of Richmond for two turns by end of June 62, or -10 NM"

I read this to mean: "10 or more units within 2 regions of Richmond for two turns SOMETIME BEFORE the end of June 62, or -10 NM"

but apparently what it really means is: "10 or more units within 2 regions of Richmond DURING TWO TURNS, ONE OF WHICH MUST BE THE LATE June 62 TURN, or -10 NM"

This is because I had units that met the conditions for FOUR turns between the Late March and Late May turns, but did not have them there on the Late June turn. In July, I was told I had not met the conditions, and I took the -10 hit.

Anyone else have a different interpretation or experience?

While I'm at it, is this a similar problem for the July Northern Papers warning?

I usually by that date, I have already captured Richmond or I'm very close to doing, so always I have many units in that area and I have no problem with that event.

I think that I have never lost 10 NM because of it. ;)

Sorry you've misunderstood, Gray. I fulfilled the intent of the rule. I was there four turns. The rule is not clear that you must be there ON the Late June turn, it simply says be there for "2 turns BY the end of June." I was. I was there four turns. It's messed up, due to poor wording.

This occurred in a PBEM game, where I think you'll find taking Richmond to be a bit more of a challenge! :mdr:

Just to be sure - you've had 10 separate units (brigades/batteries/divisions, etc) within those two regions?
Because there is common mistake of deploying, say, full corps with 4 divisions (made of some 20+ units) - but only 4 divisions count for the event purposes, not the total number batteries/brigades in them...

Thanks! Well that's a twist! Nope, I had a corps with several divisions - well beyond the requirement, but not if you count it that way. It's laughable! The NY Herald is irate about 3 divisions, but is fine with 10 brigades?!? :bonk:

Now I wonder if "within two regions of Richmond" means you're supposed to count the Richmond region as one of them, meaning you have to be adjacent.

So, to sum up:

.... nope, can't do it. Who knows what the author intended? It's as clear as Virginia mud.

At least the game is deep with complexity, to end by saying something positive.

Good explanation, Gray. Maybe this picture will help to understand it better. :)

Helpful and thorough explanation, so thanks, Gray. You have answered all my questions on this, as well as a few I might have had, had I been perspicacious enough to craft them.

If I implied there was something wrong with HAVING these rules/conditions, let me clarify: I do not. Their existence and purpose makes sense and they add great flavor and purpose to the game as well.

That the rule requires such an elaborate explanation may only mean that I am excessively dense, that I should improve the quality of my play to avoid the situation in the first place, or that a clearer means of accomplishing the same end could be had in another version, place, and time.

I guess Camden (Burkeville) didn't make the cut even though it seems to be within two regions of Richmond. Not that it's a likely region to occupy anyway, other than as one of the two sources of rail supply to Richmond. Good to know now, rather than later!

I find the easiest way to satisfy the requirement is to move Butler to Williamsburg with loose units in his stack.

I have also fulfilled the requirement by moving 10 generals into a region next to Richmond (in 10 different stacks). I was really desperate at the time to not lose 10 NM. :tournepas I don't recommend it.

Yep, I didn't include Camden because it doesn't appear in the list. But you're right. ;)

At last! McClellan can now actually accomplish something while sitting around waiting for more men!

To the tune of "Wouldn't it be Loverly", from My Fair Lady:

All I want is some men to spare,
Far away from a Rebel scare;
One troop,
One gun,
One Corps, that's fair,
Oh, wouldn't it
Be soldierly?

Just some recruits to march around,
Golly, gee, I could gain some ground,
One troop,
One gun,
One Corps I've found,
Oh, wouldn't it
Be soldierly?

Give me more, amd more, and more,
Not enough now to win the war,
One troop,
One gun,
One Corps in store,
Oh, wouldn't it
Be soldierly?

I'm trying to wrap my head around the words 'moving' and 'McClellan' in the same universe.

It's all relative.

McClellan's ego creates a heavy gravitational field (it's all about him, you see). From our perception, time moves more slowly in the presence of intense gravity and so he moves so very slowly. But in his little world, he's picking up the pace every second, and can't understand why we're all jumping about.

(Any physicists out there can correct me if needed.)

I'm resurrecting this oldie to ask: Did Burksville's region finally get added to the list of acceptable regions to be in in order to fulfill the Northern Papers Offensive requirement? (You may recall that back when this post was made, it did not qualify even though it is within two regions of Richmond.)
