Can someone tell me what is the historical setting for the option (activation, FOG and so on).
I want to play closer to what the designer consider to be realistic and historical.

You'll get the most historical AI performance with the default activation setting. Also I play with at least +3 detection for the AI, usually +4. This lets the AI make more informed decisions on how to raid and attack properly. I turn aggresiveness to low, but you may not have to do that as much when the new patch comes out. I check the "give ai more time" box. That's all I can think of right now. Good luck!

thanks for the answer. I was not specifically thinking of the AI (but that can be a good idea).
I was thinking about general reassignement and activation. Is unactive general does not move more realist than active general move with a malus? I miss not having a clue about what the designer consider to be true to reality.

I play with inactive leaders allowed to move with a malus. After a Defeat in a battle (not uncommon for the Union in early going), it's nice to be able to retreat to a town or city, where you can at least get Replacements. Also, inactive leaders can defend, so it's useful to move them to a better location.
I set stationary units to No Desertions, also. I keep Historical Stats ON. Nowadays I play at Colonel Dfficulty, the hardest (patch 1.16RC4a), and have 99% played Union. It is truly a challenge in an 1861 start, if one just uses Volunteers the first year and sticks to modest Financial options.
I haven't given the AI Detection advantages and have the Aggression at default.
Trying to achieve what the Union did by June of '62 is a task - i. e., possesion of Ft. Donelson, Nashville, Island #10, Memphis, and New Orleans. That, and keeping humongous Confederate Corps and Divisions from snatching St. Louis and Indianapolis and Harrisburg (my latest April '61 start - now in June '62) I find is enough to keep me occupied.
I won't go to Full Mobilization until '63 and then use all my Financial oprions.

If you're playing against another person, movement with malus would definitely be the correct choice. The attrition option is more open ended, but Historical for both players is more realistic.
