Your CSA Commerce Raiders have sunk X and Y

Is there any logic in how to sink the maximum amount of Yankee shipping in the Shipping Box? I usually send 3 stacks of about 8 ships into there and it seems that in 1861-1863 they sink a lot of shipping, but after that, no matter how long I keep them in there, they don't.
What are the mechanics behind sinking enemy shipping?

I do not know of anyone digging very deeply into this problem. There was some data from Major Tom over a year ago. I have attached a link below.

All right, but what are the chances of them 'making contact' ? It seems in the beginning my ships sink loads of Yankee shipping, but later on I do not see the message that I sank anything

Check for the presence of Union shipping. No shipping, no shipping available to sink.
If you see Union transports, have raiders, and STILL aren't getting any reports of sinkings, post a savefile.
