What general to promote?

As far as I understand some generals improve their stats when promoted and some generals' stats change for the worse. The game suggests that you shouldn't promote Hood. My question is, how do I find out, what general to promote and what not? Is there a list with generals, where you can study generals' stats at different promotion levels? That would be really helpful.

Or check the included AACW_ENG_Leaders.pdf on the docs subfolder of your game installation
Somewhat more user friendly that looking at the models, but some info may be outdated as it was done on the initial game version and lots of patches ahs been released since then.
There was a great updated leaders pdf done by a volunteer forum member

that was posted around here, but i can't locate it now.
Maybe somebody can come up with teh link.
Cheers

Thanks for the welcome and thanks everybody for the help, especially Jim-NC. Yes, that was exactly, what I was looking for. I only don't understand, why bburns9 didn't list the generals alphabetically.
Anyway, I've realized that it's not only Hood, but a couple of other prominent Confederate generals as well, who you better shouldn't promote. Looks like that I've to change my playing style.
As the initial question is now answered I can hijack my thread for more questions. How do I use generals with the trait "Recruiting Officer" best? I usually put them in a big city like New York. Obviously the more conscription points a city generates, the more helpful is a recruiting officer. My question therefore is, what cities generate the most conscription points? Maybe there is also a helpful list.

I cannot answer your second question buit I would like to say that I have also found Jim-NC to be helpful. I am interested in the answer to your second question though. Hope it is answered soon.

The bigger the city, the better the effect. US should put them in NYC, Philly, etc. CS should go to NO, Richmond...

So, if I went into the file (I had a quick peep) and changed all CSA generals stats to 5 and the US generals to 1 then saved the file, then used it in a game would it work with the altered file values or does it reset somehow each time the game starts? Would I accidentally become a modder?

You can see the effect of recruiting officers immediately on the Economics screen of the ledger. Deploy him to a city and put him inside of it. Check the Economics screen before and after you put him in the city and see the difference in the number of the conscripts the state generates. And the extra conscripts are immediately available to purchase units.
For the Union: New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago. In these cities Banks, Burnside, and McClernand can generate enough men for an extra division every 3 months.
This ties in to your first question, because the one Union officer you don't want to promote is Burnside. Leave him in the rear with the gear, and take the VP hit for passing him over if you have to.

CS points are also effected by the loyalty/MC of the region. I did a test on the CSA side, and found NO and Mobile give the same CS, if they have the same MC and loyalty. I find that Mobile is better than NO (higher loyalty).

In response to the original post, isn't part of the fun NOT knowing exactly what's going to happen. A little mystery is good in a game. Besides, the rebels have enough brilliant generals that they can afford to not promote a couple, so you can just be cautious with generals you're not familiar with.
