Csa ai

First of all, I'd like to request that this not turn into a debate between pbem and ai. I'm simply looking for the best settings for the southern ai. If you think that playing a human opponent is best, please bear in mind that I already agree with you. This thread is not about that.
On anything but passive, as you all probably know already, the CSA ai invades everything short of Canada, ensuring a game that's about as fun and challenging as a game of checkers against a toddler (and believe me, I'm not very good to begin with). On the other hand, putting the AI activity on "passive" seems to create an opponent that's asleep. Literally. Granted, he may not recklessly invade PA on the first turn, but he certainly doesn't react to an invasion of Harper's Ferry, either.
So the question is: What are the best settings? When playing as the south in this game, the north actually puts up a good fight, and not brainlessly. Playing against the south, however, seems to produce an absolute dearth of options. Either you pummel the CSA by walking all over his static forces or you win the game by watching him send his best armies on a suicidal quest for victory in Rochester, New York.
Any suggestions?
Edit: I just had Beauregard and nearly the whole southern army in VA march to Lancaster, PA in Sep 1861--and this on "Low Aggressiveness"! Why bother cutting them off and killing them? It's no longer a game about the Civil War.
