I don't know if you guys might have any ideas, but I was thinking about this last night and thought maybe you might given the research done on Civil War stuff. Any suggestions on how I might go about tracking down more information on a person's service in the civil war and the action of a particular regiment?

I am in the middle of researching my family history.

Best evidence I have found is a 1890 Veterans Schedule listing: Rank, Company, Regiment, and dates of enlistment/discharge. It's all hand written, so this is what I can best figure:

Private in the E Company, 3rd W.Va Calvary (Sept 62-June 65)

Anyone done anything like this before and dug up where that group of soldiers went during the war?

See if you can track down Loyal West Virginia 1861-1865 by Theodore F. Lang at a library. If I recall correctly (read it some years ago) it does have fairly detailed accounts of certain units. It's quite old, however.

For more specific information you may try the West Virginia State Archives. I'm sure one of the archivists will be happy to help you track down any relevant documents and I can't imagine the fee will be that much.
