Question on NM loss from battle

Hi, folks,
I got a surprise today, and thought I would ask about it.
At the conclusion of a battle, if a regiment of enemy regulars is eliminated, I sometimes gain a point or two of national morale (along with a specific message). When destroying a large force against the AI, I might get several. Destroying militias does not seem to generate this, as far as I can tell, and it doesn't always happen if there are just one or two regiments eliminated.
I just had a PBEM battle where I (Union) was assaulting Sprinfield, MO. The assault was not successful, but not a ghastly failure. In fact, I did eliminate 6 of his regiments, and lost none of my own. Oddly, I lost 2 national morale for my trouble. (see attachment)
I have never seen this kind of result before; is this expected?
Many Thanks,
-D

I have lost lots of battles, over the years. I don't recall ever losing NM without also losing some (non-militia) regiments. Nor do I recall my opponents losing NM without losing regiments.
What is unusual about this battle (other than losing the NM) is that my opponent lost regiments, but I retreated. This is not a common outcome for me, but I doubt it is unique. I have to admit imagining that had I not destroyed his 6 regiments, there would have been no NM effect either way.
Is there anyone out there who has had this result before? That is, losing NM without losing regiments while destroying enemy regiments?
Thanks

This must be a 'sign' of some kind, may this means you shouldn't mess around with MO milita

I've noticed something similar, but I was paying attention to my NM level while it was happening. You did not actually lose the NM. The game just is not programmed to say you gained NM for a defeat.

The message box does say that you lost NM, however, did it actually reduce your NM? Sometimes when you lose(win) a battle the message is mixed up as it said you lost(gained) NM when really it should say that you gained(lost) NM
If you did lose NM then this is a serious bug and so is more than just a misleading message log.

Wrong. You will never lose NM for losing a battle unless you have elements destroyed. There may be other factors that chagne NM such as losing\gaining a city which will effect NM after a battle, however, unless elements are destroyed there will be no change due to the battle itself.

I've lost battles with casualties 15k-20k with no elements desroyed. You do not lose NM, due to the battle itself, unless elements are destroyed.

Indeed?
I'm guessing the 4 tests are: who retreated, who took more casualties, elements destroyed, control of the region?
I'd be very interested to hear what they really are? And what order they are checked in!

Ain't it the truth?
Carnage, do you recall if you gained any NM from that battle?

No, I nether gained or lost any with that battle. I don't know if it matters, but the units lost there where under construction. At the time they had only a few hundred soldiers organized.
