Why transports AND riverine points?

Something I have trouble with is figuring out why I need physcial transport units when I can simply use the riverine point pool to move troops down and across rivers.

Can someone explain this to me?

For one thing, the riverine transport pool is very expensive in dollars and war supply. Using pre built transport ships is cheaper, but it requires preparation and foresight to but used effectivelly.

I'm not sure if this is the case, but I've always imagined the riverine pool being something like the private sector. And therefore paying to have your troops transported is much more expensive than doing it with your own materials. I'm probably completely wrong about that, though.

The point is that the riverine pool is convenient, but expensive.

Hope that helps.

Yes, it's much more expensive, but plan the location of your riverine transport fleet could be also very complicated and you could waste your money and WS on it, and also need to increase your general riverine transportation system... You must think about for a while, and then decide.

I suggest you to create a small additional force only in the Mississippi River, because you'll certainly use it for your troop's movements
For the rest, general riverine transportations

Having specific riverine transport units also allows you to attach escorts when you float troops into harm's way.

Riverine transport units can also be used to create depots.

Riverine transportation point, on the other hand, save you for somewhat tedious work in making sure the transports are where you need them at any given time.

I find that the two varieties of river transport provides flexibility and interesting choices; each with its pros and cons :)

Also, the riverine point pool is used to transfer supply along rivers. River transports can build depots, especially for amphibious operations along the Mississippi and its tributaries, but they still need supply, and the riverines built in the economics screen get them that supply.

I've seen land forces fight each other when crossing paths when using the generic river transport. See my Infantry Battle on a River thread. I wonder how well it works to fire a 12-pounder from a barge!

It works fine, the only problem is your barge goes backwards like its got reverse jet thrusters

Well, they can fight, they just don't do it very well, so you get one bad fighter vs another bad fighter ;)

Beg to disagree. Water being what it is, and a barge not being a speedboat, it won't be able to accelerate quickly enough to absorb the recoil, so it will simply desintegrate under the impact! :non:
