Moving by rail

I am a new player trying to learn the basics of the game and am having a problem with moving by a railroad. When I press the move by railroad button and move the unit I am understanding that it takes a much shorter time for the units to move to the desired location but it shows the movement along the path to the location as the same as if it was a a march to it. Any ideas?

3.) The enemy has managed to break the rail lines in the RR region you are trying to rail through. Check for the "tracks broken" icon to confirm this.

4) You don't have enough Military Control in the region(s) to use RR.

Ciao jhnbaker41,
The two biggest are that your rail has been destroyed (the twisted rail oval) or you don't have enough military control, which has to be at least 25% (I'm almost sure). This usually happens along the front lines (with the military control seesawing up and down), but occassionally an enemy unit will slip by you and tear the rails up in your rear area.

Regions with low loyalty can switch sides if not garrisoned correctly- thus preventing RR. To garrison a region any infantry, militia, or cav have to be inside the city. Regions with 90% enemy loyalty can swap very regularly. (Also disloyal regions can reduce your military control, so last turn you might have been able to RR through- but this turn you are prevented because loyalty changed the MC.

Try clicking the move by rail order BEFORE you drop the stack on its desired location. This feature has been a bit buggy recently but this seems to clear it up.

Hmm, a bit unclear. Always distinguish between Loyalty and Control.

With at least 25% Control, the side in question may use the RR and may transport Supplies.

Loyalty is something different. I have an ongoing game in 1.13b (as Union, April 61 start) that is now in very late 64 and I have taken every Objective except Mobile. There are regions in VA I have held for over two years whose Loyalty remains essentially unchanged. As a matter of fact, some of these will revert to CSA Control if I do not garrison the Regions themselves or nearby Regions.

Reaching 100% Control does not take long with adequate forces and garrisons. Loyalty takes a long time. There are definite benefits to increasing Loyalty, but Loyal Regions are not the sine qua non needed for successful operations.

Establish and maintain Control to ensure land transportation (i. e., RRs) and the uninterrupted flow of Supplies.

If you have a region with high disloyalty then it can lose some MC. So if you are trying to RR out/in of a region with 25% MC in a region with opposition loyalty then you might find the MC has dropped below your minimum. Winning battles near disloyal regions can be a good way to change them.
