Does attack posture include neighboring regions ?

Hi all -
If a corps/division/stack has the attack posture setting for that turn, will it attack enemy units outside of its region, assuming it is aware of them and can reach them that turn ?
This is what seemed to happen 2 times with Beauregards 50000 man army in the game I'm playing. His army attacked one of my corps travelling by in a neighboring region.
In both cases the corps was 3-4 regions away when movement phase began and had been sitting still for the 2 previous turns, so AI/Beauregard (seemingly) couldn't have planned to attack them before the turn began.
If this is the case, will the human players units also behave in this manner ?
