The song 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' was popular with Southern troops during the ACW. However, the song dates from the Texas War of Independence. The Yellow Rose refers to a free African-American Mulato woman (hence the reference to yellow) named Emily West, who was the mistress to General Santa Ana. On the morning of April 21, 1836 she had Santa Ana's undivided attention allowing the Texans launch their surprise attack at San Jacinto.

I have their Voices of Shiloh CD. Neighbor behind me, a Civil War reenactor, gave it to me.

Tiring a bit of hearing the well known Civil War songs, I've been searching for rare cuts. Here's one (involves a chaplain, no less): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PyRlhYY_nM
