Promoting Leaders

I am finally winning battles as the Union with my first game. How much more exciting the game is once you begin to win a few large-scale battles!

In the description box for Grant is says that he is promotable, however the icon to click on is grayed out. I looked in the manual and still could not figure out which condition is not met.

What exactly am I missing?

Promotable in the detail box = capable of promotion at some point. (Some leaders are not)

You need to earn 4+ seniority/be seniority 1 or 2 to be promoted by battles.

It says:

Seniority: 3 [4]

Does that mean he has a seniority of 3 and needs to be at 4?

I also noticed that I have Hooker who is a one star who has a seniority rating of 14 [12] and it won't let me promote him either?

Grant starts at 4 and is now at 3. You need to get him to 1 or 2, because you can always promote at 1 or 2. Hooker starts at 12, and is now at 14. Either you are playing with some randomization, or he lost a battle. He needs to get to 8 to get promoted.

Oh ok, I understand now! So a lower number is better with seniority. For some reason I was thinking the other way around. Thanks so much for the quick responses.

To advance in seniority a commander needs to perform well in battle. The turn results panel will tell you when someone is promotable. There is an exception. In the full campaign two Union naval commanders are capable of being promoted at startup. Look in the roster and you will find them as their names will be highlighted in red.

One other thing to beware of. If a commander is capable of being promoted and he is not the overall commander of a stack (lets say he is a division commander in a corp) you will not be able to promote him. You will have to remove his command from the stack in order to activate the promote icon. :sourcil:
