I'm currently reading McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era.
I have to say that I'm impressed. It's an easy read (mostly), with a depth of information that's providing a lot of understanding for me.

I'm about 20% of the way though right now.

highly recommended.

I've got the french version on my bookshelf for long and it's really a must read and read again.

Yes, it's the best single volume history I've read. Foote is the best multi-volume treatment, but try to get the original 3-volume version instead of the later 14-volume re-issue. The maps are better in the original.

always worth it!

I came this close to meeting James McPherson at the Gettysburg Institute, but he was apparently really sick and didn't make it.

I had forgotten my copy of Battle Cry so I bought a new one just to have him sign it.

Still I live really close to Gettysburg so I can go back again and maybe he will be there

I highly recommend the Gettysburg Institute if you can ever make it, and if you are in town and going you can pm me bc it is a lot more fun if you go with somebody.
