To get a feel

While waiting anxiously for the game, why not singing an appropriate song? Just to mention that I am not from the South as I am Canadian :niark:

O, I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

In Dixie Land where I was born in
Early on one frosty mornin'
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

:niark: Yeeeeaaahh! Lee! Lee! Lee! ( I guess my first game will be playing CSA)

Well Syagrius, as a fellow Canadian (and "Great Invasions" player), I just feel I have to challenge you to a PBEM game of AACW when it comes out as I always play any ACW games as the Union.

The gauntlet is thrown, will you accept it? :turc:

Then you might one day make a Great Invasions 2 (based on ACW engine :sourcil: ) match...who knows :siffle:

Oh man, a Great Invasions game based on Ageod's engine. :dada:

Seriously, I hope the music in AACW will be like BoA's music. By what I mean is that I like the way the background music in BoA will play for a while, then stop and then start playing again after a few minutes. Instead of playing in the background constantly, the music plays softly, then silence and then music again. That is just perfect for BoA. Sounds silly, but to me it's nice.

Don't dream too high...we can't do it before at least 2-3 years (lack of staff and money, not the will or data :p leure: )

I never understood 'Dixie'. The lyrics are so odd.

Look away from what?

Dixie is about a former slave homesick for the old plantation.

No problem to add a fade out at the end of mp3-files. I could do it if it is needed.

As 'Dixie' was composed by a Northern man, Daniel Emmett, it is probably appropriate to have the northern version of the song in this thread:

Away down South in the land of traitors,
Rattlesnakes and alligators,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Where cotton's king and men are chattels,
Union boys will win the battles,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Then we'll all go down to Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand,
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
I wish I was in Baltimore,
I'd make Secession traitors roar,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
We'll put the traitors all to rout,
I'll bet my boots we'll whip them out,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Then they'll wish they were in Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand,
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Oh, may our Stars and Stripes still wave
Forever o'er the free and brave,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
And let our motto ever be -
"For Union and for Liberty!"
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Then we'll all go down to Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must understand,
That he must mind his Uncle Sam,
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we'll all go down to Dixie.

Your opinion is supported by history. The original 'southern version' is known world wide, while the 'northern version' has been completely forgotten.

Being a Yankee, I'll consider it an "even trade":

The southern version of Dixie is known world wide and the North won the war!

:siffle: *whistling Dixie* :siffle:

For a real 'rush' try Moron Gould's 'American Salute'. It opens with a powerful, staccato version of 'Johnny Comes Marching Home' and goes on from there. Not from the period as it dates from 1947, but still appropriate.

My favorite work from the Civil War era is 'Battle Cry of Freedom'. As with most popular songs there was a Northern and a Southern version of lyrics, but the 'Northern' is the real one.

Both Dixie and The Battle Hymn of the Republic can be incredibly moving if done well. The version of Battle Hymn done by the gospel choir in the Ken Burns documentary is one of the most beautiful songs I know, and I'm a CSA sympathizer. :)

You are going to turn me into...

Minstrel boy is very good. In the movie "Gettysburg" catholic Union soldiers are praying while the fanfare is playing it...almost made me cry :p leure: A great moment in the movie!
