What do these flags mean?

The guy who lives right behind me, a Civil War reenactor, just posted these two flags in his yard for reasons unknown to me. Can anyone tell me what they signify? (I want to pretend like I'm an expert on such things when I go over to talk to him about it.) ;)

Look like both are Regimental colors.

The "big star" appears to be for a Texas Regiment. 5th Inf or 5th Cavs my guess.

t'other one is 35th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

I think it means he's about to cross the Ohio and invade your yard!

He's welcome to invade my yard as long as he brings his lawnmower along!

Thanks, guys. Maybe he plays both sides in his reenacting, thus he needs two flags.

My neighbor started to take down the flags, so I went out to try my new "expertise" on him.

Me: Is that the flag of the 5th Texas Cavalry?

Him: 5th Texas Infantry. Hood's brigade.

Me: John Bell Hood?

etc., etc.

He was intrigued that I seemed to know as much as I did. He told me that the 35th Ohio needs a regimental chaplain and invited me to be him. Well, maybe someday...!

The reason he had the flags out was he had been showing them to some schoolchildren the day before, and they had gotten wet in the rain. Needed to dry out. "Half nylon, half silk mildews quickly."

Hey Lovejoy, I am pretty sure you are right about playing both sides. Most units do have two separate units that they portray. This way when everyone shows up for the reenactment they are not all Union or all Confederate, which would make for a very boring show for the crowd.

As far as his flags, not too sure on the Confed one. I tried to find the 35th's site and see who there sister unit is. What little I did find was that their site is under construction, with no reference to who they portray.
