I'm surprised at the size of the openings in the last photo. This sure allow random shots to pass through and devastate the ship...

Cool photos! 
Looks way bigger that i imagined!
I must be mixing the Monitor type (that was much smaller i think) with this kind of big river ironclads.
Pocus, look at the sides gun ports shown on some of the photos. They have some kind of window shutter that lefts just a tiny opening for the gun
I guess the front port guns had something like that.
