Hi!

Slitherine and Lordzgames (i thought this guys were making a napoleonic 3D engine like the total war one?? :bonk :) had anonunced a new Napoleonic game with the same engine than the WW2 Commander: Europe at war
Look here for info and some screens
http://www.thelordzgamesstudio.com/game.php?g_id=1#

Seems like direct competition to NCP (no diplo, no long campaing...) but much more "beer and pretzel" and with hexes...
It doesn't seem to be my cup of tea :siffle:

I also investigated that game today.

In my opinion this is no more than a game for in between and Ageod need not fear yet. It is built around Slitherines "new" WWII engine which I think was a huge mistake from the start:

- written in Java :tournepas
- very slow
- cannot be run at contemporary resolutions (1024 * 768 is the max. so no one should buy it who has a 19" LCD)
- doesnt even run under Vista

However the Lordz are working on their own game with a new engine that WILL place them in competition with Ageod! I loved their Napoleonic mod for RTW and I am expecting a lot from them.

So better watch out for these guys in the long term. However, for the players it means good news: more real talent is moving into the growing indy scene!

Well, "Commander: Napoleon" isn't my cup of tea either but I would be very interested if Slitherine made a PG clone!

I was disapointed by their "Commander: Europe at war", too generic.
I hope they will differentiate units according to the countries in this new opus about Napoleonic wars.
Otherwise we will have for all countries the same "light cav" or "heavy cav" with only the sprite changing. :bonk:
NCP is going far beyond with all its specific models but let's see with this new game in development.

One thing I really like about these games is the style of graphics. If they can come up with a decent engine I'd be sold.

Hi
From the screens it does not look very promisig, at last for my tastes.
Its looks more like a big mod than a new game.
About the engine... i'm not sure one could make a good simulation of the war on napoleonic times with an engine made for the 2WW (front lines, research... )
Also i see few posibilities for napoleonic flavour with just 12 generic units and a system that seems to not allow stacking (so no combined arms, just one infantry, cavalry or artillery "corps" can coccupy an hex).

For a long and big full european ww2 campaigns all this simple concepts can be great for fast beer & pretzels game, but this new game seem to have only short campaigns.
If the famous (but very short) Waterloo Campaign look a little shallow on the very detailed NCP, i can't imagine how it will be on this new game... just pushing around a ten hexes Belgium half a dozen generic counters?? :siffle:
Well, lets wait and see...

GlobalExplorer: i totally agree with you on the fixed resolution thing... :grr:
How can somebody make a fixed resolution game on 2007 when most people have LCD or even 16:9 LCD's ?? :tournepas
