I voted for artillery, though I could specify horse artillery in particular. I like to use at least one independent massed cavalry division in each main area of the map, when I can. Also I try to fold in sharpshooter or marines/sailors, when I can, to make them abit more effective and capitalize on their "celerity".
There are many unlisted troop types that also could be mentioned.

Artillery is the god of war.
Stalin

A battery of field artillery is worth a thousand muskets.
General William Tecumseh Sherman

The artillery assigns grandeur to a profane butchery.
Frederick the Great, king of Prussia
I stand corrected :o

Too much praise cannot be bestowed on those who managed my artillery.
General Andrew Jackson after the Battle of New Orleans, 1815

God fights on the side with the best artillery.
Napoleon Bonaparte

I do not have to tell you who won the war. You know, the artillery did.
Gen George S. Patton

BOOM!

Frederick the Great, king of Germany

Actually the quote is better translated with "The artillery assigns grandeur to a profane butchery." :bonk:
Friedrich der Gro├če was king of Prussia. Maria Theresia was Emperor of Austria and thus Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation at that time for Germany didnt exist at all before 1871 and allthough this quote is one of the most duplicated in the web since CIV 4 I was never able to verify it by a reputable source and yes I know that backseat drivers have no friends ;)

Your poll is missing something...

Chorus:

If you want to have a good time,
If you want to catch the Devil,
If you want to have fun,
If you want to smell Hell,
Jine the cavalry !

Militia and Indian units are (usually) not military.

Artillery may be the God of War, but it's the lowly grunt that has to take and hold the ground. In the end, the infantry is always at the sharp end, and wins or loses the battle.

You can't hold an objective with artillery. Infantry is the "Queen of Battle." A curious name for grunts, but then I didn't make it up. :)

Very well stated. The men are the most precious unit on the battlefield and therefore my loyality is to them.

I'd like to say a quick word of appreciation for partisans, both mounted and afoot. Thanks guys! :dada:

I voted for ships, for a number of reasons. First, I love naval and maritime history, and the sea in general. Second, I have expensive tastes, and capital ships have always been by far the single most expensive item in any military arsenal throughout history. Third, I just like really big things, and in the field of military hardware, capital ships take the cake. Some folks will try to tell you less is more - poppycock, I say! MORE is more! Ramming speed!

As a reserve officer in the Norwegian cavalry, I am deeply offended by this poll. I am tempted to fix it :D
