Hi chaps, a bit of an odd place to post this I know. But quite a few of you seem pretty smart so I thought I may as well post this question here.

I have a virus or malware running on my PC called sukoku.

I have a sukoku.exe and sukoku117.exe showing in the task manager.
Normally with this sort of exe I can run the usual checkers or type the .exe
name into a browser and find out how to get rid of it - but with this one no luck so far.

Anyone have any idea how to get rid of this?

XP. The weird thing is that I seem to get this sort of problem when I download Facebook apps. I've only done this twice and both times I have had infections. You would think there would be more annoyed people out there if downloading things from Facebook can cause this sort of problem.

I'm also now getting all sorts of popups that I don't think are connected to sukoku. I can stop the sukoku exe but the popups still occur.

I won't be downloading anything else from Facebook!

Looking at the dates the checks are quite recent, so perhaps the different AV companies are not still aware of it, quite strange.

It is not in the list either of Spybot S&D


Do you have a file I can download to check if it is detected or not by my AV, KIS 2010? Which one is your AV?



Edit: perhaps this link is useful, apparently you can uninstall it, and the delete some related folders

Have you run Spybot search and Destroy? http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

I find that a most useful freeware program. I also think that if you stopped the .exe, perhaps that is not the problem?

hello I have the same problem as you but it just got worst. I was getting popups every 5 mins or so but recently my browsers, both IE and Firefox crash on every website but google. I got rid of sukoku but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I'll let you know of further develepmonts.

Thanks for all the help chaps! I ended up manually deleting the folder where the sukoku file was located and also turning off a GameHarbour startup and things seem OK now. I did get a few viruses detected with all the scanning I have been doing though!

Another problem with my PC

When I turn it on the Windows XP welcome screen appears but it never gets past this point. Weird thing is after this I can hear other software loading (when the graphics software loads there is a distinctive sound, but after this there is a weird 3 beep siren sound and I am then stuck with a frozen Windows welcome screen).

I have avast anti-virus - I wonder if this could be making the siren sound?
Any ideas very welcome!

Hmm... 3 beeps usually come from the motherboard... But if it is a siren, can be avast...
Try booting with a cd (I use the Ultimate boot cd for Windows) and see if you can get access to your pc. It even comes loaded with some very useful anti-bugs tools. Of course, if you did not do it previously you will need another working pc, and your Windows install disc also, to make the boot cd.

Thanks Franciscus, I've spent the weekend hunting for my Windows install CD.
I think I must have put it in a very secure place - and have now forgotten where!

I have a Dell XP reinstallation disk from my brothers PC, trying to work out if I can try anything using that. I think next time I will be better prepared.

P.S If I use a Windows XP disk for recovery work does it matter if it's my disk? Can I just borrow sombody elses XP disk for recovery attempts?

IIRC you can use any Windows XP or server 2003 disc (even of a different language from yours) in order to get the files that UBCD needs to create a boot disk. But if you are going to do a repair install (I had to do one a few months ago after my motherboard died suddenly and I had to replace it . - Ha, such fond memories...:grr you need a valid Windows SN key, of course

Consider doing a UBCD boot disk (check http://www.ubcd4win.com/) It can really be a life-saver.

edit -> PS: Before you embark on the long and hasardous route that so many of us have threaded before , have you tried to boot your PC in Windows "safe" mode ?. Maybe you can get past the welcome screen and access at least your anti-bug software...

To acces the menu, you have to press F8 key when windows is starting. You can try also the last good configuration

Hope it is not a motherboard problem

I tried without success but it may be because I have a wireless keyboard. I had a motherboard problem a couple of years ago and finally fixed it after weeks of work

I'll get a non-wireless keyboard tomorrow and see if I can get into safe mode with that - what a pain it is!

Thanks Franciscus, I wasn't sure if I could try a repair install without the Windows key. I won't try then unless I find my XP disk.

Hmm, perhaps it is not because of wireless.

In my case the keyboard is disabled in the bios (default settings) and I could not use it until windows desktops is active. Perhaps it is your case too

Try to search for that option in the bios. It is easy, but be careful and do not mess the other bios settings

When I had the motherboard problem I couldn't get into safe mode with a wireless keyboard but I could with a plug in keyboard.
I'm hoping the same will be true.

But is there a way to get into the bios if the keyboard is not functioning?
With a boot disk?

Good question. Just can tell you my own experience


In my case I can enter the bios settings, look at the first screen to know how to do it (usually pressing supr or del), but then I cannot use the keyboard (and the mouse) untill windows is active.


That happened before of course, when I realized it, enabled the keyboard (and the mouse), saved the bios setting, and now I have acces to the keyboard always.

I guess that the bios settings disabled the keyboard, but you have some seconds before they become active and so the keyboard is working?

Wow! I got it to work again!

Using the non-wireless keyboard I got into safe mode and ran a virus check.
It found a virus which I deleted. Booted up again and the same problem.
Went into safe mode again and ran a check disk. Booted again and it seems fine!

Amazed I could fix it so easily.

It must be very frustrating for people that only have a wireless keyboard and don't know it can be a problem getting into safe mode with that.

Thanks for all the help. I will certainly be making a boot disk in future.
