xmas is approaching and with the NCP's furore, i was thinking of playing a napoleonic tactical games (just battles/campaign).
after doing some search, there is not much on offer. i have only found the classic JTiller's battleground series (good prices but pretty old) and the pretty similar ones from HPS simulations.
which one do you recommend me as a good Nap tactical game? altenative are welcomed
(i am a strategic nut and not a tactical marvel, so intermediate complexity is enough)

So what's wrong with "old"? As you said, they're "classic". Is this not good?

Guess old means obsolete graphic level!

That can results in a nightmare..........

1. Old games do not support modern LCD resolutions. On the contrary LCDs works fine at native resolution but their performance decay trying a different, lower one.

2. When you have experienced most recend top-grahic games, Total Wars series or Warhammer Mark of Chaos, (just to quote two I tried..... NCP too!:neener :) , you have a bad taste playing old, low graphic ones: I admit it's a matter of psicologic attitude!

3. OS problem compatibility are possible....
Recentry I was not able to even install in my PC, (OS: XP Professional) Age of Sail II! :(

Good point. A pity if an older game doesn't scale up to larger, higher-res modern displays. But you can still play the older games windowed if nothing else.

Although the JT 3D leaves a lot to be desired, you can hardly improve on his 2D. The JT 2D is gorgeous!

Which is one reason I keep older systems, and don't throw them away when I add the latest and the greatest. (I have 12 systems--!!--around the house, some of them as much as 10 years old!!) If you can't get games to work in XP's or Vista's compatibility modes, maybe you can try virtualizing older OSes to run on modern machines.

But aside from the issues you mention, "old" ("tested"? "debugged"?) and "classic" ("enduring"? "quality"?) are not epithets in my book.

Matrix Games

http://www.matrixgames.com/

(you probably already know about them)

has several Napoleonic games, none of them essentially at the tactical level.

But check out Hussar Games' Napoleon in Italy, which is like AGEod's NCP but has a playable tactical component. I don't have that game myself, so I can't comment if it's good or otherwise of "tested & enduring quality."

Napoleon in Italy is not a bad game, it has a decent AI and the transition strategic map-tactic battle is ok. On the down side the game is a bit repetitive, too many clicks. I was betatester and i proposed a set of changes in the battle system to solve that, but my suggestions were not accepted :cursing:

Not a hall of fame candidate but Imperial Glory was playable in its day. There was a patch and about 50 easily applied mods that changed the number of units. The unit sizes were increased. Better ranges for all the weapons. Also the mods changed many of the uniforms for most nations. The graphics were alright for their day.

It was a standard turn based style with zoom in for tactical battles. Build up your economy, research, army and navy . custom and h2h.

Total War:Empires has a release date of early Feb 2009.

I unfortunately have lost hope about a close release of this game since it is in preparation for such a looooong time. :(

You can try Waterloo:Napoleon Last Battle (Strategy First) or Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory (Schrapnel Games). There are a lot of scenario from minor clashes to the great battles which are very challenging. There is also the possibility to edit your own battles.
