Make save games work.

Can someone please tell me how the save game function is supposed to work with screen shots.

I have figured out how to roll back a turn. Yes that took a while. My issue is the branching style of saving with the control click on the save. I can not for the life of me figure out how to load or select one of these supposedly branched saves.

Here is my issue. Had problems with CTD. Updated game to 1.02. Started new game. Pressed save game icon before hitting end of turn. Did not like the results of the choices I had made. No problem just go and do the new roll back thing I figured out. However, when I go to do this the load screen says you are on turn six of the game that was causing CTD. I click the cog icon and I get a directory listing. No matter what file name I click on I cannot load a different game.

If this is in the manual some where please tell me what page it is on because I have missed it.
This is the only thing I have found in the manual.

"Saving a Game (and PBEM) At any time during a game, you can reach the Main Menu (Esc key). From here, you can select the Save Game menu. You don’t generally have to save a game, as this is done automatically each turn once you hit End Turn. As explained previously, you have the option to restore the 24 previous turns of any saved game. Usually, the only cases where you would want to manually save a game is either if you halt your planning in the middle of a turn and want to resume giving orders after quitting the game or to change the name of the save game from its default. In other words, if you click End Turn, watch it unfold and only check your forces without entering new orders, you can quit safely and everything is saved by default. "

This does not explain how to actually restore a control clicked save game nor how to name a save game to something you want .

Please help.

There is a problem with the 'branching thing' the ctrl-save don't work well so the tooltip remains but the function was disabled.

So you are right and the manual is not up to date, you can branch a saved game. Well you can, but you must do a manual copy outside the game and then rename the 2nd game with the name of your choice, it works.

First I really appreciate your quick responses to my questions.

Ok so I never thought I was computer illiterate but your response is making me think I am. And to think I used to program for a living back in the dark ages :) . I am willing to manually copy and do the work but I really need the details of what you are talking about. How about some screen shots of you saving to an alternate name and showing which file to copy/rename and where to put them and then how to load them use them.
I am really trying to not get frustrated about being able to load a save game but this is a function that all games have had for at least the last ten years.

When I spend upwards of 30 min to a hour pondering/ordering/reorganizing my army a turn and then I have to recreate it because I can't figure out how to reload a save game its getting pretty tiresome.

Wait... Are we talking about simply reloading your turn, with current orders inputed? Or do you want to reload your turn 'fresh' with no order inputed? Or do you want to 'fork' your game and have a safe copy while you continue on the main branch?

Sorry about not being very clear. Having spent sometime with WON I am comfortable with how the role back works to go back a turn. What I would really like is a way to save the game at a major decision point ie declaring a war on someone. It would be nice after finding out 10 to 20 turns down the road that was really not a good idea and be able to load the game as it was before the dumb idea of declaring war. So in other games that save a turn automatically like civilization as a easy example. I would save a version before a major decision then be able to load that save game.

As far as I can tell having a specific save game named "Decision Point June 1805" is hard to do in WON.

I share your frustration. Apart from the numerous bugs in WON....which are gradually being worked out.....the "saved game" process is not terribly user friendly....there are so many other games with platforms that are easier to navigate and use.....

That's because WON don't use a single file for a saved game, so using standard windows for file manipulation was not possible and we are using our own custom system.

You can find a reply of captain Orso about how to create a duplicate of your saved game in Windows Explorer though.
