notice when i go into battle i am not given the option to choose how to attack and defend , Did i miss a setting????

Interesting. Normally as long as the Battle Planner is turned to on it pops up.
I played a mini-round as Spain and same result as you, no Battle Planner, just the battle.
So confirming your experience.

You don't get the battle planner on each battle, if this is what you mean! You need either a 3* or a good 2*
