Purchased from Steam - the game was fine for an hour or two (reached Feb 1815 ) but then started crashing at about 50% of loading textures.

If it worked and then it don't anymore while loading the game, then reboot the PC, verify the game through Steam. If you get the same issue, contact the helpdesk here: support@slitherine.co.uk and ask for the 'wrapper DLL'.
