Corps Moving Past a Defensive Line

I have played thru the first year as the Austrians....I have CW2 and TEAW and love the AGEOD system and mechanics....I am scratching my head, though, about my experience as the Austrians...I understand the French are much more powerful and I expect to have a challenge, but I'm frustrated by the "flow thru" of the multiple corps that just seem to bypass your defensive line and go "waaay" around you towards strategic cities in your rear...it just seems difficult to set up a defensive line...maybe I'm not used to the strategy of the period...it didn't seem quite like this in the other AGEOD games that I have played....the French units seem to be able to move a VERY long distance to bypass your defensive front...?

Reason for the difficulty in establishing defensive lines are mostly.time.preiod. In cw2, narrow eastern front made it easy to form a front line, while in teaw abundance of units and different time period made it more easy to do it as well. No classic front lines in this era...

I can buy that to a certain extent, but I am trying to recall historically where that occurred....we all know that Napoleon was the master of maneuver, but where did his subordinates simply bypass large armies/corps travelling scores of miles around or even thru them to their rear? It seems to me that in most campaigns they would generally advance, push back the enemy and eventually pin them in battle...in my game experience, the French are marching right thru a well defended province and moving onto a strategic point to the defenders rear without even so much as saying "excuse me"...

the "feel" of it doesn't seem quite right....all this to say that the lines are certainly very porous...

Thanks. While I brush up on my history of the period, let me ask this: Is the Austrian Jan 1805 starting position against moderate AI settings going to be a viable place to start the game or should I try another country? Ie., is the French position so strong that they will be tough to compete against in the early campaign (which I guess is historical)? Or, with proper tactics and strategy, can the Austrians give the AI French a run for its money?

Basic question. Do you have your defensive line set to defensive posture or offensive posture? Units will move on by in Defensive Posture.

I have tried both....even in offensive posture, I have had them bypass or possibly even go thru provinces without fighting...I cant tell exactly how they are moving, so its hard to tell...for sure, I have noticed if they are set to defensive posture, they do get bypassed...what troubles me more than this is how far the French move....they penetrate deep into your territory...perhaps that is historical, but I'm having a hard time defending against it...

Cavalry help with finding troops. All French corp have 1 division of Cav. If you don't, he can bypass fairly easily.

That could be part of the problem...thanks...

Plus a few French generals have the screener trait. A very nice trait that can keep a stack relatively hidden from opposition. The good thing is with Austria, they have the best cav in the game. So you'll get smacked around in 1805 due to the numbers disparity with France but by 1807, you should be able to compete much better. Build out those cav.

Thanks. That gives me hope!
