Battle Planner

I was wondering if someone (or more) could explain the logic for choosing a particular battle plan for one's army right before a battle ?
Terrain, Weather, Force composition (yours vs his) must all be factored in I suppose.
As a AGEOD noobie I have let the computer decide for me 90% of the times. That has worked well but I would like to have more control and was therefore wondering if I could get more information on this.
Has someone wrote up a guide or is there a link to a previous AGEOD game where this is explained ?
