12/24/14 - Fort-Kars (Armenia)

Ottoman Empire joins the war, and immediately attempts to assault Russian holdings at Kars, timing the attack for the Christmas eve.

Except that Orthodox Christmas is 13 days later, and the Turks fall back defeated...

Early January 1915 - Galicia

Austrian troops attempt to lift the siege of Lemberg three times over the last month. I can't tell if the enemy comes from inside the city, or from elsewhere - this game around my reconnaisance has been particularly bad, with entire enemy stacks invisible or showing up as supply wagons on the map.

Either way, all of the attempts fail, resulting in a handful of trophies, including medium artillery.

The area of Lemberg is quite active through the winter, with skirmishes every week, as Central Powers continue attempting to lift the siege. However that is changing, now that a fully-staffed German army is about to join the fray.

After a prolonged buildup Russian forces in Armenia are finally able to counterattack, luckily catching Turks just before they could bring back their reserves from the winter quarters. Once the second Ottoman army is on the frontlines, the forces will be equal.

Two questions puzzle me. Are Germans going to try for a breakthrough, cutting me through Tarnopol, and its depot? Are Austrians going to turn their 4 armies in Poland north-east, towards Brest-Litovsk and Minsk, or south-east, relieving Lemberg?

3/7/1915 - Third battle of Festung Lemberg (Galicia)

As expected, Central Powers forces attack Lemberg with 3 armies, and I win by sheer luck - first Central Powers AI chooses a withdrawal battleplan, as only 1 Austrian division is on site when the battle begins, second the enemy battle plan fails on the first round it is implemented. How else can I counter 8-2-4 auf Lauterbach and 9-1-3 von Below with my 2-0-2 Plehve?

I may have just won the Caucasus campaign, as, following a brief skirmish, the Ottoman army retreats to a region with no road. And it's snow on the ground. Ouch!

Great Britain is going fast to the rebels again.

Quick question. Just how did you know Samsonov died? I have never been able to see that, if it ever happened except one time I was told TE Lawrence was recuperating. I have no idea if any generals died. Pershing might have but they didn't tell me he had.

Early(?) German seaplanes versus early Russian fighters. 3 losses. War-to-date: lost 7, shot down 0.

I was checking my units and I saw one of the armies was missing. I only noticed it a turn later. I would have caught it sooner, but 2nd army must have had a capable ** general that took over, so I never noticed the drop in CPs in that stack.

42 Russian plans and 18 German planes - and I still take heavier losses despite numerical superiority and comparable experience.

Here's a million gold coin question: do I keep replenishing my planes, hoping to increase their experience, or let them all die, and when the replacements come in, they will fly a better model? Because if I replenish only a part of an element, they still fly the older model...

War-to-date tally: lost 16, shot down 2.

Central Powers really do not wish to give up that fortress... I don't know how much longer I can keep up - I am going through eight supply trains every turn just to feed my men.

Bulgaria and Greece enter the war. There is no French landing in Saloniki; I am curious if there ever will be. In the meantime I have to pull my Serbs back to protect the eastern border. Bulgarian forces try to attack at Pirot but are repulsed.

So he disappeared but you really had no notification that he was gone? I think that needs to be fixed.

Ah, just chalk it down to wartime confusion ;)

Maybe it is time I give up on the airforce altogether. 48 planes attack 12 German ones. I lose 15 to 0 enemy losses. Go figure :)

War-to-date: lost 31, killed 2.

14 more losses, for a total of 45. Still only 2 enemy planes shot down.

Russian builds

There was a question from Matrix forums as to what am I building.

Well... nothing. My money is spent left and right on replacements, generals, and munition factories. Frankly, Russia has enough forces to worry about building new ones. So the only build the entire campaign is the fighter wing I just mentioned. Eventually I'd like to be able to afford artillery.

There must be some serious pounding taking place on the West Front, as casualties have been ramping up for the last few turns. In the beginning Russian losses accounted for 60% of the total losses in the world. By now it's 25%.

Lemberg finally falls, and that must be the last straw that breaks Rumanian neutrality... they are now in the war as well. Their best leaders are 3-2-4 and 4-1-2 on the board and 3-4-1 and 3-3-1 in reserves. Eastern Entente has rolled really, really bad for its generals in this game.

No real surprises there, the front is stable more or less. I wonder just how many Austrian forces have I drawn to the north to allow for Western Entente's success.

I am really surprised at how well French troops are advancing into Germany. Especially since Germans had a very narrow front to defend - Belgium remained neutral.

Central Powers are slowly squeezing Serbia on both flanks. While skirmishes go both ways, it is the sheer number of enemies that is starting to take toll on my troops. Not to mention that I will have to decide soon whether to retreat to Belgrade or south to Skopje.

And another loss in the skies. Needless to say, I have decided to sacrifice my artillery development for fighters, one air wing ready in 6 weeks and another in 10.

Total losses: 92, total victories: 5.

This was the largest engagement of the Eastern front thus far, eclipsing even the four-month-long Lemberg siege. The battle lines have been static here for half a year, until an opportunity was spotted - Germans left a depot very lightly guarded. Russians moved in, and waited in hastily dug up trenchettes...
