Updating to Public Beta

Hello everyone,
when I try to opt in the Beta via Steam it downloads an update, but says version 1.0 afterwards on the loading screen and in the credits, even after a new clean install.
With a normal install it says 1.01 after installation. Is this working as intended?
Am I supposed to download the exe manually and replace it after switching off automatic updates?
